Biographical / Historical
In 1915 a group of pastors of the Lutheran Synodical Conference began meeting with Iowa and Joint Ohio synod pastors in Minnesota, agreeing to avoid polemics and to concentrate on what they were teaching about disputed doctrines in their pastoral work. This effort led to the Saint Paul Theses of 1916 ("Zur Einigung: Leitsaetze, die auf den intersynodalen Konferenzen … angenommen wurden"). A second effort grew out of the Saint Paul pastoral meetings and led the Missouri, Wisconsin, Joint Ohio and Iowa synods to appoint official "intersynodical committees" to seek official agreement on the issues of the predestination controversy. The LCMS Committee on Intersynodical Matters was appointed by the 1917 convention. These committees met two or three times a year and produced the "Intersynodical (Chicago) Theses." The effort came to an end when the 1929 Missouri Synod convention rejected the theses.
