Biographical / Historical
The Missouri Synod convention in 1938 established a “Fiduciary Committee on Matters of Doctrine and Practice” to serve in an advisory capacity to the president of the synod between conventions. The committee was continued by subsequent conventions until its function was taken over by the Commission on Theology and Church Relations established in 1962. The committee came to be called the “Advisory Committee on Doctrine and Practice.” It met several times over the years to consider theological issues referred to it. In the early 1950s its report to the synod on several issues was criticized by some members of the synod.
