Biographical / Historical
Martin Walker was born April 2, 1887 to the Rev. H.H. Walker and his wife, Eleanor nee Melcher. He attended York Collegiate Institute for four years before attending Concordia College, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, from which he graduated in 1896. He then attended Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, receiving his theological diploma in 1899. His ordination was held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, New York City on September 10, 1899.
His first charge was as English missionary-at-large in New York City. He became a professor at Concordia Hawthorne, New York in 1902, where he served until 1952.
He served the English District of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, first as a vice-president, then as the chairman of the mission board, then again as a vice-president, and finally as president of the district in 1938. He held that position until 1945.
He contributed to a number of publications and authored the book, Greater Love Hath No Man, in 1947.
He died on July 12, 1967 in Buffalo, New York.
