Frederick S. Wenger Papers
Scope and Contents
The collection contains correspondence, sermons and conference papers, plus a document signed by President Pfotenhauer on 5 August 1900 certifying that Wenger is a duly ordained minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and pastor at Hamburg, Minnesota. It also includes a file on the discussions between the Saint Louis and Springfield faculties on the issue of engagement and marriage.

Biographical / Historical
Frederick S. Wenger was born 8 February 1878 in Berne, Switzerland. He immigrated to the U.S. with his mother at age 6 and settled in Quincy, Illinois. He was confirmed at Saint James Lutheran Church in Quincy at age 13. He began his ministerial training in 1891 at Concordia College, Springfield, Illinois, then studied at Concordia College, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from 1892 to 1897. He graduated from Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis, Missouri, in 1900. He was ordained on 5 August 1900 as assistant to President Friedrich Pfotenhauer of the Minnesota District at Hamburg, Minnesota, and served as "emergency man" for Minnesota, the Dakotas, Montana and Northwestern Canada. He served as pastor of Concordia Church, Fair Haven, Minnesota, from 1902 to 1906; as professor at Luther College, New Orleans, Louisiana, from 1906 to 1910 and as pastor at Concordia Lutheran Church, Frohna, Missouri, from 1910 to 1923. He became a professor at Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, Illinois, where he served until 1956. He taught exegesis, hermeneutics, Bible history, German, Latin and Hebrew. He also served as secretary of the seminary faculty. He died 11 July 1963.
