Biographical / Historical
Markus Lutheran Church 4032 N. 22nd St. (Later 22nd and Angelica) St. Louis, MO
- Church-work began in 1904 by Professor George Mezger. Organized the same year by Bethlehem Lutheran Church laymen.
- First met at Ehlers Hall, 14th and Angelrodt St.
- First church building 1905 at 22nd and Angelica St.
- First church facility housed church and school on the main floor, parsonage upstairs.
- Second building 1913 on same lot as first building.
- Joined the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States in 1915.
- A fire in 1937 caused massive damage to the interior of the church, but the church was refurbished that same year.
- A building program, started in 1941 produced a new church building in 1950.
- Markus went from being a “mid-town” church in the 1950s to a “inner-city” church in 1979.
- Markus Lutheran Church held its closing service May 31, 1981
Education
- School was opened in 1906 in the same building as the church.
- When the new church was built in 1913, the old church building was used exclusively for the school.
- The original church-school-parsonage was torn down and a new education building was erected in 1950 as a result of the building program started in 1941. The school held classes for first through eighth grade and kindergarten.
- Markus and Bethlehem jointly sponsored the Northside Lutheran School from 1968 to 1971 because of continuing financial difficulty. In 1977 the school joined the Central City Lutheran School Association, which included St. Stephen and Transfiguration.
- Central City Lutheran School continued to use the church facilities after the church closure in 1981.
