Hunter was born 23 September 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. He received an M.Div. from Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis) in 1973; a Ph.D. from the Lutheran School of Theology (Chicago) in 1975; and a D.Min. from Fuller Theological Seminary (Pasadena, California) in 1977. He the founder of the Church Growth Center (Corunna, Indiana) in 1975 and served as its president beginning in 1978.
