Biographical / Historical
Immanuel was organized in 1847 by Pastor Johann F. Buenger. It was one of the four churches that made up the Gesamtgemeinde, the others being Trinity, Holy Cross, and Zion. It left the Missouri Synod in 1978 and joined the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches (AELC), then merging into the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in 1988. In 2011 it merged with St. Philip. It was originally on 15th and Morgan in the city of Saint Louis, but it moved to Lexington and Marcus Ave., where it had property that included its cemetery, Western Lutheran Cemetery.
