Medal. Martin Luther. 500th Anniversary of the Imperial Diet of Worms, 2021
Scope and Contents
(OCT 2021 #1 M1) This gold-plated (64 mm diameter) piece marks the 500th anniversary of the Diet of Worms (1521). This obverse of this historic medallion shows Dr. Luther wearing his academic Doctor's cap which is borrowed from an etching of Luther's profile rendered by the skilled Lucas Cranach. The outer legend reads: "MARTIN LUTHER'S PUBLIC DEFENSE Before THE IMPERIAL DIET | 1521 + 500TH Anniversary + 2021". The reverse shows an image of Luther presenting his defense to Emperor Charles V with seven other observers. The interior legend reads: "Diet | of Worms, Germany | April 18, 1521 -- Psalm 119:46". The outer legend reads: "Unless you can show me from the Bible where I am wrong, I cannot recant. Here I stand, God help me! Amen. Martin Luther.
