Physical Description

This color lithograph depicts a stately and resolute Martin Luther with a Talar and doctor's cap, cradling an open book in his left hand and pointing to it with his right. Books, scrolls, and a lute are scattered around the room. The window panes suggest the window of Luther's cell at the Wartburg. The green curtains have been reworked to reveal more books. An ornate Gothic church chair, plume, and hourglass are included in the background. The artist and printer are unknown.

The original ornate frame for this printed work is in keeping with the high quality lithograph. The frame is made up of many smaller sections and is finished with hand-cut decorative elements in each corner.

It was on display at CHI from 2022 to 2023.
