Physical Description
This Meissen china cup is marked on the bottom with the Meissen crossed swords trademark. There are additional markings on the bottom. This cup is 8.7 cm tall, 7.7 cm wide at the mouth, and 4.6 cm wide on the pedastal base. The handle has a cross and leaf motif. Opposite the handle is an overglaze relief depicting Lutheran and Melanchthon with clasped hands. Luther is supporting a golden cross with his right hand, and a sword is lying at their feet. Both men are dressed in black robes. On the opposite side is a figure dressed in a suit of armor and royal robes depicting the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. There is green ground and palm threes as background images. The words "Eine fest Burg is unser Gott" surround the rim. There are four gilted circles. This is a possible mate to the Stephan Cup also held at CHI. This cup was alleged to have been brought to the United States by the Saxon immigrants in 1939. It was donated by Rudolph Keyl.
