Biographical / Historical

A text panel at an earlier CHI museum display reads, "The use of older church books by Missouri Synod pastors drew criticism even from within the Synod. Particularly offensive to some was the use of responsorial chanting which was characterized a 'Roman Catholic.' C. F. W. Walther, however, cherished the continuity of Lutheran worship with the worship of the church of all times and wrote in defense of this practice. 'Those who cry out should remember that the Roman Catholic Church possesses every beautiful song of the old orthodox church; the chants and antiphons and responses were brought into the church long before the false teaching of Rome crept in. The Christian Church since the beginning, even in the Old Testament, has derived great joy from singing.'"
