The purpose for which Concordia Publishing House was established in the year 1869 has remained unchanged. It was founded as the publication house of and for the Lutheran church organization familiarly known as the MISSOURI SYNOD and legally designated as the EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN SYNOD OF MISSOURI, OHIO, AND OTHER STATES. Before 1869 members of Old Trinity at Saint Louis, jointly and severally had done volunteer service in the way of supplying a periodical and books, having published DER LUTHERANER as early as 1844, a German edition of the BIBLE about 1845, and a German HYMN-BOOK in 1847.
