Biographical / Historical
William Dau was born on 8 February 1864. After graduating from Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis) in 1886, he served as a pastor in Memphis, moving in 1892 to Conover, North Carolina, where he served as a professor at Concordia College. From 1899 until 1905 he served Saint Paul (Hammond, Indiana). From 1905 to 1926 he was on the faculty of Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis). From 1926 to 1929 he was the president of Valparaiso University. Besides academic posts, he was also involved in synodical government, serving as the vice-president of the Central District from 1903 to 1905. Dau was a prolific writer and was on the editorial staff of the "Lutheran Witness", "Homiletic Magazine", "Theological Monthly", and "Theological Quarterly". He died on 21 April 1944.
