Scope and Contents

This collection contains sermons and other writings of Crull. It also includes correspondence with William Dallmann, 1888–1892, regarding the first hymnal of the English Missouri Synod. Of particular significance is his personal notebook, his “Red Book,” containing hymn texts and translations with entries dating 1882–1904. Also noteworthy are several English writings, including student sermons while attending Concordia Seminary, an address delivered on 4 July 1865 — Independence Day, shortly after the end of the Civil War — and the English address at the dedication of Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis, in 1883.

  • “Germania,” 1858–1862 — Ledger bearing Crull’s signature with copies of speeches given by students at Concordia College, Saint Louis/Fort Wayne. “Germania” was the name of a student society, but the ledger also contains material pertaining to a “Clio” society of which Crull was sometimes the president. The purpose of the “Clio” society was to promote the use of the English language. Several speeches pertain to the Civil War and include Crull’s strong support of the Union cause.

Biographical / Historical

August Crull was born on 27 January 1845 in Rostock, Germany. He was the son of Hofrat F. Crull, a respected lawyer. After his father’s death his mother married Dr. A. E. Hoppe. Crull studied in Germany until 1856, when he came to America and enrolled at Concordia College, then located in Saint Louis. He graduated from Concordia College (by this time in Fort Wayne, Indiana) in 1862. He completed his seminary training in Saint Louis and was ordained as assistant pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1865. He served as assistant pastor there until 1871. From 1871 to 1873 he served as pastor of the Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Later he served as instructor of German and French at Concordia College, Fort Wayne, Indiana. He retired in 1913 after having taught for 42 years. He translated many German hymns into English and authored two collections of poetry. He also wrote a German grammar and edited some of C. F. W. Walther’s works. He died in Milwaukee on February 17, 1923.

Otto, librarian of Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Indiana, in January 1960. Additional documents from the CHI Biographical Files from various sources were added in January 2009.
