Biographical / Historical

Georg Stoeckhardt was born on 17 February 1842. He studied theology at the universities in Erlangen and Leipzig from 1862 to 1866. In 1870 he became the assistant pastor at the German Lutheran Church des Billets at Paris. In 1878 he accepted a call to Holy Cross Church in Saint Louis and served there until 1887. He had begun to give exegetical lectures at the seminary in 1879 and continued to do so. In 1903 he received his Doctor of Divinity degree from Luther Seminary in Hamline, Minnesota. He died on 9 January 1913.

Other Finding Aids

Dr. William Goerss has shared the following inventory of the George Stoeckhardt Papers presently located in the Archives of the Wisconsin Synod - Northwestern Publishing House, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Until approximately 1963 these papers were located in the personal collection of the Rev. Paul Pieper, son of Dr. August Pieper. August Pieper was married to Stoeckhard's sister, Marianne Stoeckhardt, and hence the uncle's materials came into the possession of the nephew. (August R. Suelflow, May 1964). Since that date, some of these materials have been donated to CHI in 2007. This list has been retained for historical purposes.
